Woman’s Club hosts speakers on hiring individuals with disabilities.
The GFWC Woman’s Club of Westminster, Inc. kicked off its monthly meeting on February 11, 2014, at the Carroll Non-Profit Center with a silent auction, a major annual fundraiser for the club. The auction and club’s holiday luncheon, originally scheduled for December, was postponed due to inclement weather.
The postponement of the December event meant jumping through many hoops by the planning committee. Clubwomen Sandy Ferguson and Barbara Humbert stepped up and reorganized the auction and Lynn Walter suggested and took charge of an online auction in January. Members also did their part and participated in both segments of the auction which provided funds for the club’s budget in support of its volunteer activities.
Following the auction, the meeting began with Club president Suzanne Albert calling on Home Life Community Service Program Co-Chairman Mary Dudderar who then introduced the two guest speakers, Karen Gross, Assistant Director of the Mid-Atlantic ADA Center, and Laura Lyons, MSW, a Business Liaison with the Maryland State Department of Education Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS).
Ms. Gross is responsible for the Center's outreach efforts as well as conducting training on the Americans with Disabilities Act, which she stressed is important civil rights legislation. She has coordinated a variety of trainings particularly on employment topics for businesses, state and local governments, disability organizations and individuals with disabilities.
Ms. Lyons provides support to the business community by helping them locate qualified individuals to fill vacant job positions and other support services. She also works with individuals with disabilities to find them employment. She said that the Carroll County Community has been supportive of DORS mission especially the business community in hiring individuals with disabilities.
Both speakers empathized that a major reason for speaking to clubs and organization such as ours is to encourage members to spread the word about hiring the disabled, for despite the Americans with Disabilities Act legislation, the percentage of employed individuals with disabilities has not increased and more advocacy and education needs to be done around the many abilities of individuals with disabilities to meet employment needs in today's labor market.
The Woman’s Club is honored to partner with DORS and Mosaic Community Services to further employment of these individuals by conducting mock employment interviews to help them practice their interview skills and by collecting and donating gently used business attire to wear both for job hunting and for work.

May 14, 2013, The GFWC Woman’s Club of Westminster, Inc. held its Spring Luncheon with guest speaker Dr. Mary L. Cleave, Astronaut

Suzanne Albert, Club President, welcomed the members and guests, followed by Lynda Lockard who gave the invocation. Club Vice President Nancy James announced the names of the clubwomen who submitted art entries at the GFWC state convention. They were Rosemary Barnes, Mary Lou Poirier, Claire Berent, who won first place in watercolor, Jo Ann Barlow, who won an Honorable Mention for her pastel, and Ginny Houser, who won second and third places for her photography.
Shown left is Club Treasurer Barb Gunther with Astronaut Dr. Mary L. Cleave, guest speaker at the Club's Spring Luncheon.
Clubwoman Barbara Gunther introduced guest speaker, former astronaut, Dr. Mary L. Cleave, who was titled “A Maryland Woman Who Soars” in an article dated 6 June 2012 and authored by Jill Moss Greenberg in The Maryland Women’s Journal. The article described Dr. Cleave as an accomplished woman who achieved her goals in spite of dealing with many obstacles and biases and referred to her, among many superlatives as an American heroine and an extraordinary role model. Gunther felt that Mary Cleave embodied the club’s motto for the 2012-2014 term“Uniting Our Voice for Leadership and Equality,”and was pleased that she honored the Woman’s Club by speaking at its year-end luncheon.
Gunther said that Mary l. Cleave, Ph.D., P.E. is an environmental engineer who retired from NASA as the associate administrator for science in 2007. In that capacity she was responsible for numerous spacecraft located from the edge of our solar system to orbiting the sun.
Dr. Cleave flew on the space shuttle Atlantis as a mission specialist. She was the flight engineer and operated the robot arm on the space shuttle in 1985 and deployed the Magellan spacecraft from the shuttle in 1989. Magellan went on to study Venus. She then served NASA in a range of capacities including CAPCOM (capsule communicator) for five shuttle flights. She joined NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD in 1991 and wasa project manager responsible for launching a spacecraft in 1997 which operated for 13 years and helped increase understanding of climate change, oceanography and atmospheric science.
Dr. Cleave then took the podium and showed a presentation of her space mission. She described her fellow astronauts on the mission as being like her brothers and described her flight in detail and with humor.
Onehumorous anecdote dealt with when she went through parachute training and was parasailing off a boat on a windy day. She took off,and when she cut the lines so she could start coming down as she was supposed to, she is of such slight build that she kept going up. She was chased by the recovery boats until finally a wind change brought her down. She said imagine how the crews in the boats would have felt having to report that they lost her on her first day out – that they saw her up, up and away! She went on to say that space suits at the time came in only two sizes, medium and large, so she was chosen to work the robot arm for the astronauts who were outside the shuttle. These occurrences helped NASA change their procedures for future astronauts to accommodate various sizes.

Holiday Ornament – Baker Memorial Chapel
The GFWC Woman’s Club of Westminster presents its annual ornament, the ninth in a series depicting beautiful historic buildings in the community of Westminster. The 2012 ornament, a rendition of the Baker Memorial Chapel, is the third McDaniel College building in the series. Prior ornaments featuring McDaniel buildings were of the Ward Memorial Arch and the Baker Chapel.
The Baker Memorial Chapel was formerly dedicated in 1958 following a two-year construction period utilizing funds donated by the Baker family. It required the largest crane ever put together in Carroll County to raise the steeple to its place 113 feet above the porch.
Originally built for Sunday Chapel Services, it now serves as a multi-purpose building. The main floor is used for both college and private events while offices are on its lower floor. The altar, pulpit, and lectern are on wheels and can be moved as needed.
The ornaments are priced at $21 each including MD sales tax and can be purchased at the McDaniel College Bookstore located at 2 College Hill, Westminster, MD 21157, or by contacting Sandy Ferguson of the Woman’s Club at 410-848-3032 or slferguson@verizon.net.

September 7, 2012 -Launch of Sixth Art Exhibit, “Fall Into Art”
Pictured above, left to right, are Nancy James and Barbara Humbert,
Co-Chairmen of the Arts Community Service Project.
The Arts Community Service Project, a department of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Westminster, began its fall season by launching its sixth in an ongoing series of art exhibits at the Westminster Non-Profit Center on September 7, 2012. The State Federation recognized the Arts Department in April of this year by awarding them a Certificate of Excellence in the area of Arts Partnership for its sponsorship of the exhibits.
These juried shows began in 2011 and provide an opportunity for many local artists to display their work and expose those who use the meeting rooms where the exhibits are displayed to a greater appreciation for art. The rooms are used by many organizations including our Woman’s Club.
This exhibit titled “Fall Into Art” showcases the work of eight artists using varied media. It will remain at the Center through the first week in January. Helping the Woman’s Club coordinate this exhibit were Mark Krider, Director of the Carroll Non-Profit Center; Audrey Cimino, Director of the Community Foundation of Carroll County; and artist and owner of Gismos Art, Lyndi McNulty.
Arts Department Co-Chairmen, Barb and Nancy, said they were excited and pleased by the number of artists in the community who have participated in the exhibits and by the quality of their work. They agreed that they always look forward to seeing what will be submitted for each new show.
For further information contact Barbara Humbert at beh495@yahoo.com or Nancy James at nhjames409@verizon.net.

April 24, 2012: “Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign”
Several members of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Woman’s Club of Westminster, Junior Woman’s Club of Westminster, and STARS Juniorette Club of Westminster met at Belle Grove Square Park in regard to “Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign” on April 24th. Child Abuse America has introduced the pinwheel as the symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention nationwide. The campaign represents Prevent Child Abuse America’s efforts to change the way our nation thinks about prevention, focusing on community activities and public policies that promote healthy child development and child abuse prevention. Our clubs were invited to participate in this campaign to help raise awareness.
Connie Sgarlata, assistant executive director of Family and Children’s Services of Central Maryland, spoke on the subject of child abuse and neglect. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds. More than five children die every day as a result of child abuse in the United States. It occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education. Some of the symptoms are unexplained injuries, changes in sleeping habits, changes in school performance, fear of going home, and changes in behavior.
Developed by the Adams County Child Advocacy Center, the following “One with Courage” pledge was used at the 2012 Pinwheels to Prevent Child Abuse Conference.
“I commit to learning the signs and symptoms of child abuse and sharing this information with others in the community. I commit to finding ways I can make an impact on the heartbreak that is child abuse, whether that is through donations, volunteering, prevention, or bringing awareness to other community members. I commit to following my instincts when it comes to the safety of children and reporting instances of suspected child abuse. By adhering to the complete pledge above, I acknowledge that then, and only then, can I be the One with Courage and be an active combatant against child abuse.”

Club of Westminster, met November 8 at the Carroll Non-Profit Center
in Westminster. After a thought for a day involving life lessons by
Gerri Reck, clubwomen Maryl Harshey and Fran Rock presented an

County has started assessing pollutants in the Prettyboy Reservoir watershed and some of the smaller areas of Liberty Reservoir watershed from storm water discharge. An area of concern is the treatment of wastewater. Recommendations in the

May 10, 2011: Spring Luncheon
In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Westminster, members met May 10 for a spring luncheon at Antrim 1844 in Taneytown.
After welcoming and introducing guests by Club President Carol Kershner, greetings were given by GFWC Maryland President Jo Miller and International President Carlene Garner. “We are women of commitment,” said President Garner as she gave a 100th Anniversary certificate with a letter of accommodation to the club.
Master of ceremonies, Helen Wolf, introduced past presidents Babs Condon, Jackie Hering, Lura Griswold, and Trinka Cueman as they presented the historical background of the club in 25-year segments. The first segment focused on its beginnings including the founder, Carrie Rinehart Wantz, who, at the age of 34 started the Westminster Woman’s Literary Club in January, 1911. The next segment highlighted such projects as support for the founding of the library, the building of the new high school in 1935 with our encouragement, and the forming of two clubs for young women. The third segment featured our service to the newly constructed Carroll County Hospital in 1961 and our fund raisers that supported the Historical Society. In the last piece, a phrase recurs in all the records of the anniversary celebrations. It is in 2 forms: ‘the women who did…’ and, ‘a woman who did…’. This phrase describes who we have been, who we still are, and with persistence and imagination, who we will be.
Barbara Hering, Carol Shook, and Lura Griswold were recognized for their 50 years of service and Nancy McAllister for her 25 years. In addition, President Kershner acknowledged all past presidents with a rose and thanked Dolly Snyder, program chairwoman, and her committee for all their efforts.

After a thought for a day entitled “Oh Bring Flowers” by President Carol Kershner, winners of the short story/essay contest were announced by clubwoman, Susan Case. Scott Arminger won first place for the middle school short story entitled “Unforgettable” and Brian Edwards with his poem, “On the Field,” won first place for middle school poetry. Arrangements were made as early as the seventh century and they have remained a vital medium for creative expression.
In addition to the day’s program and a memorial tribute to Carol Bare, various community service programs and committee reports were presented in addition to changes in the club’s by-laws.

selling holiday ornaments depicting local landmarks. This year’s

valedictorian of the class of 1894. In 1976, the chapel was
placed on the National Historic Register. Over the many years
since it was built, Baker Chapel remains a favorite site for weddings
and concerts.
